The oath when obtaining Romanian citizenship: what really happens and should you fear it?

  • citizenship

Many applicants fear the oath more than waiting for the DOSAR or the citizenship order. The paradox is that the oath is the most formalized and predictable stage of the procedure.

Why the fear arises: • appearing in person; • the public setting; • the language and the fear of “not coping.”

But legally, the oath is not a review of your right to citizenship; it is the final confirmation of your status. What the order means and the role of the oath If you have received the order, the state has already recognized your right to citizenship. The oath does not reopen the case and does not replace the commission. It is the legal act of acquiring citizenship — your formal answer to the state: “I accept.”

The oath is not an interview At the oath there is no interview about your case. You may be asked clarifying questions, but they concern your identity and your understanding of the procedure, not a review of the grounds. How the procedure works

Usually everything follows a standard pattern: registration and identity check; cross-checking the data in the order against the documents; reciting the text of the oath; signing documents and issuing the confirmation.

In most cases the procedure does not take long and goes calmly.

What is actually checked at the oath?

What is actually checked: • your identity and documents; • that the data in the order match; • your understanding of what is happening; • your ability to recite the text of the oath.

What is not checked: • in-depth knowledge of history; • perfect grammar; • fluent C1-level language; • political views; • a reassessment of the ground.

Language: can they “fail” you?

What matters is not the quality of your speech but that you act knowingly. An accent, mistakes or nervousness are not a problem. Risks arise only if a person does not understand what is happening at all or cannot recite the text. The real risks

In practice, problems are more often technical: • errors in the data or in transliteration; • an incomplete set of documents; • expired papers. Refusals on the merits at the oath are rare and are possible only in cases of serious legal violations (for example, forged documents).

Can the order be canceled on the day of the oath? The order is an administrative act. It cannot be canceled arbitrarily “on the spot.” If the case is lawful and the documents are correct, the oath is the final formality.

An important point The oath is not the end but the beginning of a new legal reality. After it come questions about documents, banks, tax status and how your life in the EU is structured.
