How to check the status of a Romanian citizenship case with ANC

The status of a Romanian citizenship case can be checked on your own and free of charge — on the authority's website, by case number, article of the law and year of registration. There is one limitation here, and it is worth understanding right away: the public lists show the movement of cases and the orders issued, but they do not say what exactly is missing from your file. Below — where to look, what the lines in the lists mean, what makes up the wait and what to do if the case has not moved for years.

How do you check the status of a Romanian citizenship case with ANC?

The check is done on the authority's official website cetatenie.just.ro, in the "Stadiu dosar" section: you choose the article of the law under which the application was filed and the year the case was registered, after which a file with the list opens.

The sections are kept separately — for each article of the law and for each year. That is why the first step is always the same: find out under which article your application was filed. The case line shows the date of the Citizenship Commission session and a decision column with the order number. A past date with an empty decision column means the case is in progress and will get a new date. The orders — Ordine — are published separately: these are lists of cases already decided.

The authority warns directly that there are no paid ways to speed up the review, and promises of that kind come from unofficial sources. The check itself costs nothing and takes 10 minutes.

Who can check and what you need to have on hand

Any applicant can check the progress in the lists: the data is open and no registration is needed. You need three parameters on hand — the case number, the article of the law and the year of registration.

Those who filed their file through a Romanian consulate often do not know the number: it is assigned only at the authority. In that case the number is requested in writing, the answer arrives by post, and this is the only proper way: such information is not given out by phone.

The authority discloses information about the content of the case only to the applicant or their representative — under a written mandate and after identity verification. The difference is fundamental: the online lists show the movement of cases, while a conversation about the content of the file goes by documents. Representation works even when the applicant lives outside Romania; the authority confirms the form of the document before the request is filed.

What the lists show and what they do not

The lists show three things: up to which number cases have been distributed to the commission, which cases have received an order and under which article, as well as invitations to interviews and their results.

What they do not show is the main misunderstanding of the topic. Online, you will not be told that a document is missing from the file, that there is an error in a civil status record or that the case has been returned for further work. The absence of your number from the list of orders means exactly one thing: no decision has been issued yet.

The reason for a pause is not reflected in the lists at all. It is either in the queue or in the file itself — and it is impossible to tell which from the lists. This is where the most common mistake comes from: the authority's silence is taken for movement on the case.

Procedure and timelines: what makes up the wait

A case goes through 5 stages: registration and assignment of a number, document check, distribution to the Citizenship Commission, review and the order, then the oath.

The number of the last distributed case gives a guide to the timeline. The authority publishes up to which number and which year distribution has reached, and this line shows where your case stands relative to the queue — this is more accurate than any average timelines. A request for additional documents shifts the timeline: until the answer arrives, the case does not go to the commission. That is why two cases filed on the same day diverge in timing, and the difference is made by the quality of the file, not by the queue.

The order does not end the path. After it, the oath is scheduled, the citizenship certificate is handed over at the ceremony, and with it come transcriere, the CNP, the identity card and the passport.

You filed and are waiting but have not checked the status: what to do

Start with facts, not with a complaint. A four-step sequence works in any situation.

First — find your case in the lists by article and year; if you do not have the number, request it in writing.

Second — check where the queue is now: if distribution has long moved past your number, the case is stuck not because of the authority's workload.

Third — request information on the substance, in person or through a representative.

Fourth — if the statutory review period has been exceeded, go to the administrative court with a claim to compel the authority to decide the case.

Going to court does not spoil relations with the authority: the court checks compliance with the deadline, it does not review the applicant's right. The most expensive mistake on this topic looks mundane — the case is stuck because of one document, and the applicant learns about it years later, when some of the records already have to be obtained again.

How Alliance works

Alliance handles stalled cases under a contract that sets out the timelines, the amount and the working procedure; the company's licenses are publicly available on the website.

The scope of work on such a case: establishing the number and the article, tracking movement in the lists, written requests to the authority, analyzing the reason for the pause, putting the file in order and, where the statutory period has been exceeded, preparing an application to the administrative court. The legal side is handled by specialized professionals; the head is responsible for strategy, coordination and work with the documents. The applicant's personal presence is needed only where the law requires it.

"The right to Romanian citizenship is confirmed by documents — and we carry that right all the way to a passport. The authority makes the decision: no one can guarantee the result, but the file can be put together so that it raises no questions. The timelines, the amount and the working procedure are in the contract."

What to remember: the check takes 10 minutes

The case status is open, is checked by three parameters and costs nothing. The lists will show the movement of the queue, and only a request based on documents will give the reason for the pause.

What if my number is not in the lists?

Absence from the list of orders means no decision has been issued. Check the article and the year — the sections are kept separately. If the file was filed through a consulate, the case number is first requested in writing.

Can the review be sped up for money?

No. The authority warns directly that there are no paid ways to speed things up. There is one lawful way to influence the timeline: going to the administrative court when the set period has been exceeded.

What happens after the order?

The oath is scheduled, and the citizenship certificate is handed over at the ceremony. After that come transcriere, the CNP, the identity card and the passport — this is a separate stage with its own timelines.
